i've been playing with 2d (flatland) ray tracing some more, it's so much fun 
i plan to make a simple editor for constructing such 2d scenes, and finally adding support for refraction and lens objects. ought to make a for a neat little toy 
in this scene, there are 3 light-emitting lines (the one on the left emits subtractively, just for kicks) which themselves do not reflect light (see [link]), and some circles which only reflect in a perfect-mirror-like way.
this makes the light distribution extremely difficult to sample, especially in an unbiased manner (without consistent error).

love the colors of this.. very lively and spring-like
the title also reminded me of edwin abbott's book Flatland.. 'twas one of my all time favorites. quite an amusing first part that describes life in Flatland with all the special physics laws, and a cleverly written second part about dimentions, extending to the third dimention and beyond. It's a short book, do read it if you ever lay your hands on a copy.
