Hi guys, sorry it's been so long since the last update ^^;

Chaotica has been tremendously improved since the last public release, thanks to amazing support from the dA fractal community :heart: and Glare Technologies. After many semi-public betas in #Aposhack it's long overdue to talk about the changes here!

A ton of bugfixes and improvements have been made throughout the application, and especially the world editor. Undo and Redo for edits has been implemented, the (affine) transform axes now are labelled and you can also edit the post-affines, the randomly generated parameters are much nicer, cropn is natively supported, batch mode has been greatly improved, if you're feeling really nerdy there's even a Lyapunov exponent histogram in there! ... the complete list of changes will be really long, and I still haven't finished putting that together! ^^;

One of the more significant changes is in the licensing structure: there are now two commercial versions, namely

Chaotica HD: Resolution limited to 4 megapixels, eg 2560x1600
Chaotica Studio: No resolution limit, with other distinguishing features to follow (eg. with regard to animation)

The free version will now be limited to approx 1.23mpix, eg 1280x960, to reflect the low cost of the HD version.

The previous Chaotica licence, which is equivalent to the Studio licence, was somewhat inaccessible to hobbyist users who want to make really nice wallpapers, but don't expect to make money back selling prints. Chaotica HD's low cost of €25 (or $32) is intended to meet this market, while the Studio version remains targeted at professional digital artists. Please see the store page (Euro or USD) if you'd like to purchase a licence.

Chaotica now has an awesome logo designed by Sam Lavoie (Lavoi here on dA). Sam is extremely skilled and very professional, it was a pleasure working with him (again!) on this.

There are so many exciting new things to come in the near future, and I'll try to post more often here :blushes:

Last but not least, check out these great renders from :iconchaoticafractals::

Now that there is a 64-bit APO out, does the 64 bit Chaotica support all the plugins?

The 64bit Apo has been out a while, it's the plugins that are new. Chaotica could indeed support these, for those wishing to make big prints with non-native transforms; so far only one other person has requested it, but it's anyway quite low-hanging fruit so I should get to it at some point :)

So if I were to use the free version of this chaotica software, and incorporated an image created on chaotica onto a photoshop painting I was making, no matter how small the chaotica fractal may be, Would I still not be allowed to sell prints of the image I have created? (More info, I have taken some pictures on my camera and edited them on photoshop, I have a chaotica fractal behind the image that I have made and was wondering if this would still restrict my options to sell what I have made as a print on deviantart)

I understand that developing and improving software is time consuming and should be compensated for, particularly if someone is selling prints on a regular basis made from said software. But the new pricing just put large format and unlimited size renders totally out of reach of probably 95% (or more) of us that try but with little success to sell prints. And now even a hobbyist that wants to make decent sized wallpaper has to pay more than the original license. I do appreciate everything you have done in the past though and am sorry to have to be the first to complain. I do understand that you and the company you work with had to take this approach to make up for development costs. But this is a huge pricing change...

I'm not sure what you mean by "even a hobbyist that wants to make decent sized wallpaper has to pay more than the original license", this is the opposite of how the change went: it used to be that there's only one Chaotica licence even for hobbyists, at $100, and now there is a new one at $32. That's 1/3rd the price...

I totally understand, I really do. I was only expressing my own disappointment. :) The last time I looked, which I admit has been quite some time, the license was $25 for unlimited size with no free updates? I know because I considered buying it back then. So now for $32 you can only do up to 2560 X. The free version is only up to 1280 X, hardly suitable for any modern sized monitor wallpaper which the hobbyist creates for...

I hope that if not now, then maybe in the future the $32 version will be worth it to you, it's difficult to put the price any lower sorry :hmm:

Your honest input is valued, and thank you for seeing my side too :thumbsup:

I understand and thanks Tom! And if anyone has followed this little banter, I want to make it clear that I am not saying Chaotica is not worth it, because I know it is. The renders are superb. I was just taken aback by the license changes is all.

Apophysis is still free, and you're welcome to use this for making prints. If you want to use superior commercial software for making commercial products, there is the basic consequence that without some sort of "making worthwhile of the process for the tool creator" the process breaks down.

You're far from the first to complain, and I don't even see this point you're making as a proper complaint; as far as I can tell, you're saying "32 US Dollars is too much for a hobbyist, and 100 US Dollars is too much for a professional" and while I accept your point, I must respectfully disagree. Even college students spend more than 32 Dollars on beer most weekends, and professionals who spend thousands on computers and printing can surely find 100 Dollars somewhere for the (professionally developed and supported) tools they use.

A final thing is that there is 50% off for students, and there will be discounts/specials/sales, competitions with prizes, etc. I am doing my best to make Chaotica accessible in pricing, and the feedback I've gotten so far indicates that it's well worth the price for most people.

$32 is to much for a hobbyist in my opinion. I thought $25 was very reasonable is all I'm saying. I really didn't intend to debate this because as I clearly stated in my comment, I understand the need for professional developers to charge for their hard work. While I had considered purchasing the unlimited size license in the past for $25, I was only stating my disappointment that Now it is 4 times as much for unlimited size, and totally beyond my unprofessional pockets. :) No biggie.

It was a very different licence type too, the $25 - it was a "once off" licence for the current version, which is really a very bad way to do it because the improvements come so fast.

I've answered a lot of Indigo Renderer emails where customers tell us about some problem in a version of Indigo from over a year ago, in a previous major revision, and it's always horrible to have to say "sorry but you have to buy a licence for the 3.x series"; that's even with an "all upgrades in major revision" licence, so anything less is really a terrible thing for a developer looking to keep their customers happy with product improvements and fixes.

Ha, the hobbyist license comes out just after I buy it =P.

Anyway, thanks for the update! Undo and redo will make it sooooooo much easier to use. And the animation feature in the pipeline sounds interesting -- doing it command line with flam3 is a bit of a pain XD.

yeahhh, i am not sure how i can make this up to you after the fact :( i really needed to transition to this (cheaper overall) two-tier pricing model, and yet i knew a few people just wanted to make great Pixel Porn :lol:

one thing's for sure, you will never want for chaotica-ness, i'll only be too happy to give you a licence for any future versions! thanks so much for your early support :thanks:

Oh, no worries. I'll probably make use of the features of the Studio license anyway, as I like making massive renders :).

And you are very welcome for the support! Now I just need to find time to make another fractal...
